OHLALA CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT OVERTURNS GAY MARRIAGE BAN

“What a day for San Francisco, what a day for California, what a day for America, what a day for equality,” Mr. Newsom said before a crowd of several hundred jubilant supporters at San Francisco City Hall.

California's Supreme Court ruled that a ban on gay marriage was unlawful today, effectively leaving same-sex couples in America's most populous state free to tie the knot in a landmark ruling.
In an opinion that analysts say could have nationwide implications for the issue, the seven-member panel voted 4-3 in favor of plaintiffs who argued that restricting marriage to men and women was discriminatory. AFP

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: "I respect the court's decision and as governor, I will uphold its ruling." He also reiterated his previously stated opposition to an anti-gay marriage initiative proposed for the November ballot. That initiative would write a ban on same-sex unions into California's constitution.
