THE 2008 HERNDON CLIMB TIME: 2:35:59
A volleyball player from Pennsylvania (picture above) had the honor this morning of scaling the Herndon Monument, signaling the end of the freshman or "plebe" year for the Naval Academy Class of 2011.
"I had the easy job," said Midshipman Reichel, who is 6-feet 6-inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. "My classmates were the ones who held me up. It was great to get it done."
The plebes scaled the monument in 2 hours, 35 minutes and 59 seconds, about twice as long as the better times in recent years. Despite numerous spills, cuts and bruises there were no major injuries to report today at the annual ritual that marks the end of the grueling plebe year. And that came as sweet relief to fans after the academy's leadership announced this year that it was considering an overhaul of the climb for the sake of safety and professionalism.
We have a short video of this year's Herndon climbing HERE

these photos are from last year, 2007.
