German Chancellor Angela Merkel (the one not wearing make up, just in case who were wondering) looking fierce at the Aids aid Association reception in Berlin tonight.
Medical professionals in Germany may have stumbled across a possible cure for AIDS after treating a man for cancer.
Doctors in Berlin are reporting that they cured a man of AIDS by giving him transplanted blood stem cells from a person naturally resistant to the virus. The patient, a 42-year-old American resident in Germany.
But while the case has novel medical implications, experts say it will be of little immediate use in treating AIDS. Top American researchers called the treatment unthinkable for the millions infected in Africa and impractical even for insured patients in top research hospitals [NY Times]
Two million people die of AIDS every year and the virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.
