DIM SUM FUNERAL AT THE AFI-FEST IN LOS ANGELES
So, this past Wednesday, Alek and I went to AFI-Fest 2008 at the Mann's Chinese Theater to see the feature film written and executive produced by our friend Donald Martin, entitled Dim Sum Funeral. The movie is starring Bai Ling (on the picture below with Donald and Francis) Russell Wong, Talia Shire, and Kelly Hu [Dim Sum Funeral at the AFI-Fest 2008].
What can I say? The film was excellent. Beautifully written, and beautifully cast. A true labor of love, and Alek and I loved it.
This film will make you laugh and cry, and (trust me) you don't have to be chinese to see your own family in it. Dim Sum Funeral is about a bunch of screwed-up Asian-American siblings summoned home to honor their mother's dying wish: a traditional Chinese funeral.
If you think Jewish or Irish funerals are something, they have nothing over the Chinese. Russell Wong gives one of his best performances ever. And, damn, is he sexy or what? Kelly Hu is gorgeous as a bitchy former Miss Taiwan. Bai Ling is wonderfully crazy as one half of a lesbian couple searching for sperm (to make a baby). And Talia Shire is a joy to watch.
By the end of this superb movie, you feel so good ... like, maybe, picking up the phone and calling your mother. Okay, maybe not my mother, but you know what I mean. Dim Sum Funeral is a must-see.
