MILK & SEAN PENN A POWERFUL COMBINATION
last night Trent, Alek and I went to see the movie MILK. The movie directed by Gus Van Sant is stunning, it has one of the finest ensemble casts, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, John Brolin, Diego Luna, Alison Pill, topped by a powerful Sean Penn's performance.
Tomorrow, Nov 27, it will be 30 years since Harvey Milk was gunned down in his San Francisco office by his fellow politician Dan White. 30 years later, Harvey Milk's fight have never been so vivid. Anti human rights activists such as Anita Bryant were just as scary as they are today, hiding under the name of god. Fear and ignorance remains our worst enemy when it comes to human rights.
In 1978 Proposition 6 in California would have barred gay and lesbians (and their supporters) from working in the schools. In 2008 Proposition 8 in California was approved which overturn same-sex marriage, taking away someone's right! Before moving to the US I never really paid attention to the 'ballot' thing. Which is for me is something really scary, knowing that tomorrow anyone with enough money and exposure (let's say a church) can take people's rights. Such important issues as human rights should not be decided on a ballot.
In 1985 The times of Harvey Milk documentary won the Academy Award for best documentary film (video below ... and in case you are wondering it is Kathleen Turner who announces it).
After seeing the movie there is no doubts for us that next year Sean Penn will get his best actor award for his Harvey Milk extraordinary performance!
