GETTING PERSONAL WITH TYM RODERS

We had a pleasure to ask Tym this amazing and multitalented model, a few interesting questions and this is what he told us about him self:

TR: I was raised by my loving parents in the small northern BC town of Terrace. After I finished high school, I worked at the local TV/Radio station behind the scenes and as an on air personality. After a year of dabbling in the media industry, I decided to move to Vancouver and pursue my passion for makeup artistry. I trained as a makeup artist in 2004 at Blanche MacDonald. I was awarded the CNOMA Award for Best Student Fashion Makeup Design in Canada. I worked at Holt Renfrew with Stila and Prescriptives before I struck out on my own. Some of my jobs included makeup for weddings, photo shoots and modeling shows. While I was working in makeup, I modeled in a couple of small campaigns for Slikman and Ginch Gonch. I began to think that this might be the career for me. Everything changed when a photographer friend of mine told me about a modeling contest. They were looking for a new spokesmodel. After competing and winning the campaign, I decided I would give modeling a serious shot. So, I quit doing makeup and I haven't looked back!

I am often asked about my fitness routine by quite a few people. Most of it is just good genetics. Thanks, Mom and Dad! Even so, keeping a lean and toned body isn't just about aesthetics for me. It's primarily about keeping a healthy lifestyle. I was diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes when I was 11 years old. Living with this disease has kept me very aware of the impact daily routine has on my body. I work out 7 days a week. In addition, I dance and jog as much as I can. Working out and being healthy isn't a chore for me. It's a way of life.

Q: What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
TR: Creatively trance/electronic music definitely gets me in the right mindset. I used to listen to it all the time in high school art class so I guess I associate it with being creative. It’s full of energy, but it’s not distracting. Spiritually and emotionally working out gets me revved up and helps me work out issues I’m having in my life. Jogging around the seawall in Vancouver with all the beauty of nature around you definitely puts everything in perspective.

Q: What is your most treasure possession?
TR: My cat Violet. I guess she’s not really a traditional material possession, but she’s been a constant in my life for a while. She’s not just treasured, she’s irreplaceable.

Q: What do you most value in people?
TR: Honesty. If you’re an honest person everything else falls into place. Honesty instills trust, which leads people to rely on you and respect you. If you are an honest person and surround yourself with honest people life gets a lot less complicated.

Q: What is your favorite occupation?
TR: I would have to say working at the NTV Station after high school at home in Terrace was the best job I’ve ever had. I loved being an on air personality and working behind the scenes. I would sometimes get the 6pm-3am shift in master control which left me in the station on my own. Nothing like getting paid to watch multiple TVs all night.

Q: If you were reincarnated as some other plant or animal, what would it be?
TR: Well I love all animals but I would have to say it would be very cool to come back as a bird of some sort. The feeling of being able to fly under your own power would be pretty intense.

Q: Where would you like to live?
TR: San Francisco. It’s like Vancouver but WAY bigger and much more progressive. If it wasn’t for all the red tape moving between countries I’d have moved there YEARS ago.

Q: Your favorite virtue?
TR: Honesty. See above. :)

Q: What is your motto?
TR: Remind yourself everyday how lucky you are to wake up safe in your own bed, in a country that gives you the freedom to be who you want to be and do what you want to do. So many millions of people don’t get this opportunity that we are given everyday. I guess it’s not really a motto, but it makes me grateful for the beginning of every new day.

Q: What do you wear when you sleep?
TR: Sleep is time for renewal, and getting back to a natural state. I don’t understand why anyone would wear PJs. You’re constricted by clothes all day. Give it a rest already. ;)

Q: Where do you see your self 5 years from now?
TR: Such a tough question. I barely know where I’m going to be tomorrow let alone 5 years from now. I’m in the middle of getting my bartending license so we’ll see how that goes. The only solid goal I have is to be happy and healthy. The rest I prefer to keep a surprise.
