Where are the men? Or, more specifically, where are the American men? As much as I love actors like Johnny Depp, George Clooney and Denzel Washington, these big-time movie stars have been big-time movie stars for at least a decade. They are undeniably great, but where is the next generation of homegrown talent? While there’s been a new wave of leading men from Australia (Russell Crowe, for one) and England has provided Hollywood with an endless stream of dashing aspirants (like Orlando Bloom, Ben Barnes and Robert Pattinson, the matinee idol/vampire of ‘‘Twilight’’), America (and I’m even including Canada) has fallen short. Except in comedy, where Seth Rogen has emerged as a new kind of sex symbol, American cinema has been curiously lacking in native testosterone [NYT Style]
