It was just three weeks ago that international pop star Mika officially came out as a gay man in a world exclusive interview with Instinct, but the story didn’t end there. Now, in our September cover story, Mika is opening up on men, music and more—and nothing is off limits!
n “The Boy Who Knew Too Much Grows Up,” Mika shares his journey of the past few years, both professionally in creating his new album, The Origin Of Love, and personally, discussing his relationship for the very first time anywhere. And it was only through his music that Mika says he was able to find the comfort within his own skin, living openly as a gay man. “The album kind of tracks the cutting up of my personal life, really for the first time,” Mika says. “I said I was going to write about myself and not just put characters in my songs...Now it’s a lot more to heart.”
Addressing the questions some will inevitably throw his way over why he has to decided to publicly come out now, Mika also offers some insight on the idea of celebrity in the gay community. “It’s cool to share your stories as a public person; to share your perspective on sexuality and on life. But it’s only cool to do it if you are ready and if you have a truly positive thing to say,” Mika says. “I don’t think people have a responsibility to share their private life, but I think public people have a responsibility to be sincere.”
